The staff are compared to workers in a factory. They operate on the patients in the ward and ultimately try and fix them. The staff operates on the patients until the patients have been declared successful. A successful operation means that the patient is now ready to re-enter the outside world. He has had his individualism removed and he is now just like everybody else. The operation itself is scary because patients will come out with black and blue eyes. It may be even more scary that their personality has been completely altered. Other patients will be declared Chronics. Chronics are patients who cannot be repaired and who are in the hospital for good.

Workers In a Factory
"The staff, now, they consider Ruckly one of their failures, but I'm not sure but what he's better off than if the installation had been perfect. The installations they do nowadays are generally successful. The technicians got more skill and experience. No more of the button holes in the forehead, no cutting at all-they go in through the eye sockets." (15)
